In the early 19th centurythere was little progress in scientific development in the UK.
That only changed when philosophical societies sprang up all over the country, where people could meet and listen to talks about the latest discoveries and inventions. William Whewell of Cambridge University became one of the founders of the Cambridge Philosophical Society.
This transformed English universities into the world's leading centres of scientific research as we know them today. The term "scientist" did not exist until then and was first coined by William Whewell in 1833.
It is said that there was only one condition for becoming a member of the Philosophical Society: applicants simply had to pass the entrance exam by opening a mechanical box invented by the scientist William Whewell called the Cambridge Labyrinth.
Now is your chance to take up this challenge that was the first step for many inventors in the world of science.
Will you accept the challenge?
Ideal for storing a gift inside and reproducing it once it has been reset.
